13th June 2011

Half of Britons believe now is a good time to buy a house, with a third expecting UK property values to increase in the next 12 months, according to the Halifax.

The high street bank's study revealed growing optimism surrounding the housing market.

Of those polled, 32% said they thought property values would increase in the coming year, compared with only 23% who thought they would fall and 26% who thought they would stay the same.

The majority of people are not expecting big changes in property prices, with 57% expecting changes to range from rises of 5% to falls of 5%, and only 24% are expecting bigger changes.

People are more optimistic about house prices in their local area, with 35% expecting the cost of property to increase where they live and only 18% predicting falls.
